Minister of Culture and Sport Miri Regev (Likud) toured the Jewish Community of Hebron on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. She participated in a forum of mayors and local municipalities where she met with Malachi Levinger, mayor of the neighboring community of Kiryat Arba.

Minister Regev visited the many historic sites in Hebron including the Tel Hevron archaeological excavation with its 4,000-year-old steps, where ancient artifacts were discovered inscribed with the words "To the King, Hebron."

She also visited the Beit Hadassah building, originally build in 1893. Today it serves as a residence and houses the Hebron visitors center and museum which features the new 4D movie, Touching Eternity

Minister Regev of course visited Hebron's most well-known site, the Tomb of Machpela, burial site of the Biblical Matriarchs and Patriarchs.

Standing in front of the cenotaph of Sarah, for whom her beloved husband Abraham purchased the ancient burial cave, she stated:

"I have arrived here in the month of Elul, the month of Slichot, to the Cave of Machpela, the resting place of our founding fathers and mothers."

As she glanced behind her at the memorial to "Sarah Imenu", she continued, "the coming month should give us strength -- to the nation of Israel, the land of Israel and the Torah of Israel -- happiness and health for all of Israel."

At the mayors forum, Minister Regev discussed the government funding of public cultural and sporting events and educational activities in periphery areas. She added that she views Hebron no different than other Israeli cities such as Dimona, Tel Aviv and Nazareth. "I will continue to facilitate access to culture and sport for all Israeli citizens," she stated.

Elected officials who have visited Hebron in recent months include Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat,  Jerusalem Affairs Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Deputy Knesset Speaker Nava Boker (Likud), MK Oded Forer (Yisrael Beiteinu), MK Dr. Avraham Neguisse (Likud), MK Roy Folkman (Kulanu) and others.
