Thousands are expected for the annual Shabbat Chayei Sarah in Hebron, November 22-23, 2024. The annual tradition marks the reading of the Torah portion in which the patriarch Abraham purchases the Cave of Machpela in Hebron.
Dr. Noam Arnon, spokesperson for the Jewish community of Hebron and long-time resident stated, “the particularly exciting moment comes on Saturday morning, when the Torah parsha is read describing the purchase of the Cave of Machpela, at the site of the very cave itself. The Torah reading takes on a special meaning when it is heard in the same place where the Biblical story took place thousands of years ago.”
He noted the hospitality displayed by residents of Hebron and its neighboring sister city of Kiryat Arba, in the tradition of the city’s most famous hosts, the Biblical Abraham and Sarah.
“This shared experience leaves a deep impression on both the guests and the hosts,” Dr. Arnon stated. “The bonds formed between the host families and their guests often extend far beyond the Shabbat itself and reminds one of the deep connection that unites the Jewish people to the city of the ancestors.”
This year, the crowds are scheduled to return, but in a limited fashion, as the giant tents will not be erected. Nevertheless, the Hebron Guest Association in collaboration with Chabad of Hebron and the Religious Council of Kiryat Arba - Hebron will offer basic Shabbat meals free of charge, in the lower floor of the Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs complex. Pre registration is required.
The 2,000-year-old Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs, which houses the Cave of Machpela, will be reserved for Jewish prayers including the Hall of Isaac and Rebecca, the largest in the complex.
In addition to tent space on the grass in front of the Machpela complex, a new parking area for trailers has been established. For details and registration call 050-647-7744.
The Hebron Fund, will once again arrange organized meals and tours for visitors from abroad. In the past they have brought letters of support to IDF soldiers from Jewish schools and synagogues from the United States and other countries. They will also welcome lone soldiers, reservists, and evacuees on a special VIP program.
Uri Karzan, CEO of the Committee of the Jewish Community of Hebron which is leading the organization of all Shabbat activities stated, "Shabbat Chayei Sarah in Hebron is much more than a religious or cultural event. It has become a tangible expression of the deep connection between the Jewish people and their heritage and it demonstrates the power of collective responsibility and unity.”
He added, “this year, more than ever, Shabbat Chayei Sarah in Hebron symbolizes the resilience of the Jewish people. It demonstrates how even in challenging times, the deep connection to our heritage continues to exist and even strengthens the link between the past, present and future in this holy place."
Yishai Fleisher, international spokesperson for the Jewish community of Hebron called it “Woodstock meets the Bible,” referring to the famous 1960s rock festival. “Its both a national celebration, religious and Biblical,” he said. “Especially now after a year of war it’s important to get together and get some consolation from the mothers and fathers,” he added.
