New Chief Rabbi Inaugurated in Hebron

Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Schwartz installed in special community-wide ceremony.

The official inauguration of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Schwartz as chief rabbi of Hebron-Kiryat Arba took place on Sunday June 18, 2023 in a special community-wide celebration.

Rabbi Schwartz was elected by the Israeli Ministry of Religious Affairs in May. He serves as a rabbi at Yeshivat Nir in Kiryat Arba, a hesder yeshiva which combines Torah study with army service, and also works at the Beit Haggai Youth Village, a therapeutic center for at-risk youth located in the Hebron Hills Region.

Rabbi Schwartz is a graduate of the Merkaz HaRav Central Universal Yeshiva in Jerusalem where he received rabbinic ordination.

Attending the ceremony were Rabbi David Lau, Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Dov Lior, retired Chief Rabbi of Hebron-Kiryat Arba and former head of Yeshivat Nir, Rabbi Yaakov Shapira, head of Mercaz HaRav and member of the Chief Rabbinate Council, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, chief rabbi of Tzfat, Rabbi Shlomo Ben-Hamo, chief rabbi of Kiryat Gat and head of Yeshiva Or Hevron in Kiryat Arba, Rabbi Michael Malchieli, Minister of Religious Affairs, Rabbi Yehuda Amichai, head of Conversion Authority in the Prime Minister’s Office, Eyal Gelman, head of Hebron city council, Eliyahu Libman, head of Kiryat Arba city council, Amitai Cohen, head of the Machpela religious council, ministers in the Israeli cabinet, and other distinguished guests.
 
The event began at the Cave of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs (Tomb of Machpela) in Hebron followed by a procession ending at the Kiryat Arba Cultural Center where Rabbi Schwartz gave a special blessing to the children.
