Sept 22, 2013 - St.-Sgt. Maj. Gal (Gabriel) Kobi, 20, of Tirat Carmel, was killed when he was shot in the neck at a checkpoint near Hebron's Cave of Patriarchs.
Gal Kobi of the Givat Brigade was shot and killed by a sniper at a checkpoint near the Cave of Patriarchs in the city of Hebron. The shooting occurred in the midst of violent Palestinian riots in which Palestinians targeted Jews who were gathered to celebrate the holiday of Sukkot at the holy site. The soldiers had beenstationed in Hebron during the Sukkot holiday to protect them. Shot in the neck, Kobi was evacuated to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem, where doctors tried to revive him.
A neighbor described him as smart and witty. His high school principal, Irit Zelig, said that Gal was a lovely boy, well-liked by all, who achieved high grades. In becoming a combat soldier, he served as an example to his fellow classmates. "He brought honor to the school and to the town," she said.
St.-Sgt. Maj. Gal (Gabriel) Kobi was buried in the Haifa military cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Ovad and Smadar, and two younger brothers.
